The Jambalaya foundation piecing and quilting
pattern is easily adaptable for making other-size quilts, accessories,
home-dec items, and embellishing garments in your favorite colorways,
such as these:
Old-fashioned
blues
double-flanged pillow
Approximately 20"x20"
(16" square pillow form) |
Bright batiks
piped pillow
Approximately 17"x17"
(16" square pillow form) |
Some garment
patterns I particularly like for
incorporating Jambalaya blocks are:
Vogue
2232, a jacket by Geoffrey Beene
"All Around Jacket"
by Ragstock (www.deborahbrunner.com/ragstock.htm)
"Mission Jacket" by
The Sewing Workshop (www.sewingworkshop.com/pattern.htm)
Blocks can be inset (such as into the sleeve
points of the Vogue/Beene jacket--add extra to the last "round"
of piecing to allow for trimming to pattern shape)... used as
a border (such as around the collar of the Mission Jacket)...
or "scribble stitched" to add surface interest to a
simple design (such as the All Around Jacket).
Scribble stitching means to applique the
blocks to the fabric by straight-stitching back and forth over
the block raw edges (just like darning). Alternatively, the blocks
could be appliqued using a satin stitch so the edges look more
finished. It's fun to make blocks in different sizes (simply
photocopy using the reduction feature); for instance, make three
blocks at 50% and applique (either by scribble-stitching or satin
stitching) in a row across the front of a sweatshirt.
